only 可以用在if之后，按照和它連用的不同時(shí)態(tài)分別表示希望、愿望或遺憾。

　　A if only+現(xiàn)在時(shí)/will表示希望：

　　If only he comes in time.

　　但愿他能及時(shí)來到。相當(dāng)于：

　　We hope he will come in time.

　　我們希望他會(huì)及時(shí)來。

　　If only he will listen to her.

　　但愿他愿意聽她的話。相當(dāng)于：

　　We hope he will be willing to listen to her.

　　我們希望他愿意聽她的話。

　　if only+一般過去時(shí)/過去完成時(shí)表示遺憾

　　If only he didn’ t smoke!

　　要是他不吸煙該多好!相當(dāng)于：

　　We wish he didn’t smoke./We are sorry he smokes.

　　我們希望他不吸煙。/他吸煙我們感到遺憾。

　　If only(=I/We wish) Tom were here!

　　湯姆要是在這里就好了!

　　If only you hadn’t said，‘Liar’!

　　要是你沒說“你撒謊”就好了。相當(dāng)于：

　　We wish you hadn’t said，‘Liar’/We are sorry you said，‘Liar.’

　　我們希望你沒說“你撒謊”。/你說了“你撒謊”，我們感到遺憾。

　　if only+would表示對于現(xiàn)在的動(dòng)作的遺憾，可以作為 if only +一般過去時(shí)的替代說法，它具有 wish+would的含義：

　　If only he would drive more slowly!

　　要是他肯開得慢一些就好了!相當(dāng)于：

　　We are sorry that he isn’t willing to drive more slowly.

　　他不愿意開得慢一些，我們感到遺憾。

　　if only+would也可以表示沒有多大希望實(shí)現(xiàn)的關(guān)于將來的愿望：

　　If only(=I/We wish) the rain would stop!

　　要是雨能停該多好!(我/我們希望雨停，但我們想雨會(huì)繼續(xù)下個(gè)不停。)

　　if only從句如上所述可以單獨(dú)使用，也可以作為一個(gè)完整的條件句的組成部分。
